From Central Florida. I just came across this video, I wish I saw 2 months ago. I just replace my 18 year old Trane with a Lennox in April 2024. I was going to get another Trane, but recommendations was on Lennox or Carrier. So went with Lennox Elite series, is what my A/C company carried. Also a friend who works for Carrier recommend. ( Said both were good) Im not sure I like it yet. When it goes on its like an acceleration (like a plane taking off). They said those are the newer models. They also say it my narrow ducks and vents. (May need replacement home is 38 yrs old.) They had to come back and add more freon and do a few tweaks, because it wasn't cooling to capacity, it got better. But I still feel it doesn't cool to capacity? Now as of today they area coming back because last night it just kept running and running for 2 1/2 hours last night kept me up. I had to raised the temp. up a notch every hour to get it to quite down. Im praying it can all be resolve wth it not costing me. Ps: The A/C Company I've been dealing with have been great, good and helpful so far. Any Advice?

Dude..........in Texas heat.......hobbits come here to throw rings 105°.........is typical. But then there is the heat index......that sucks. If your house is less than 1500 sq/ft.........central air is stupid to have. Window units are cheaper, cool faster (provided you use the right one for the right size) and you'll spend way less on your utility bill. Went window unit.......and my bill is literally about half of what I paid last year. And if one unit goes out...........Walmart has a unit for what you'll pay a tech to just look at your central unit. With central air, been there done that got the tshirt and it's ridiculous for small houses to have.

I have 3 AC systems for my house, 2004, 2004 and 19 freaking 86! All good, all cold, all Lennox. Maintenance? Nothing special, clean them annually, make sure the filters are VERY high flow (ie: not a lot of filtration, just enough to keep the AC unit in good shape). NO professional maintenance packages. We had one once and Jesus, they did nothing but read the temp at the duct (which anyone can do) and then try to sell something. $70 filters, UV light, etc.

How do you feel about replacing a 14 yo heat pump in Florida, now - A new blower motor was put in 2022 + a new filter drier in 2023, so it could run a bit longer. But I don't like the idea of switch to propane.

The best way is to do a heat load calculator. You have to consider the number of windows, the type of insulation, what part of the home is facing south, etc etc

Increased efficiency is moot when the unit cost is 2-3x and the reliability is non existent. Then you get 5yr down the road and need 8k in repairs or another 30k for a unit.

I upgraded to a variable speed 5 ton carrier heat pump, propane furnace dual fuel system. Cost me around 9k including installation. 2500 sq ft, single story house. I am very happy with it! Hardly ever notice it's running and it does turn off, usually in the evening. Heat pump reaches its limit around 10-12 degrees then the furnace takes over. On average I'm saving $20 a month on electric and only fill once every 3 years on propane as appose to annually before.

HELP ME!! have a 2.5 tonne in a new build (2021), in El Paso, Texas and it’s 1,100 sq feet and my system sometimes doesn’t cool and the house gets up to like 90degrees and I get a warning on my ecobee thermostat saying there’s a cooling problem. I’ve gotten two HVAC company’s out and both have told me my unit is too small. But according to all the data I’ve found, my unit is well within the range to be ok? I’m looking at a unit/furnace replacement and I really wanna explore every angle before I shell out a lot of money

I have a 23yr old Rheem 10 Seer AC system. Still runs great. Over the years ive only had to replace the contacts and capacitor. It runs on avg only 3 months out of the year and then only for a few days at a time typically. Ive thought about replacing it just because of age, but id probably never get my money back on the new system and my biggest fear, the new system turns out to not be as reliable as the +20yr old system it would replace.

If one is using the square feet method that is fine if one has 8 foot ceilings. However if one has 10 to 12 foot ceilings then that will require more BTU's from a unit. Because more inside cubic feet of air has to be run through the unit. Also a two story house should have two smaller home units to be efficient instead of just one. One unit for the down stairs and another for the upstairs as they are complete different zones.

Went from single stage goodman to a 2 speed Trane AC bill dropped little not much IMO the ROI not worth it. Better off with sealing your duct work, and better insulation. I'm in Phoenix when we run the AC it's running at full power seer like 8 when it's 117F with 26% humidity.

This is one of the easiest things to get right, but easily the thing most often NOT done right, especially in new construction. I see it every day, and it drives me nuts. My neighbors' units, which I can see from my porch, literally lean against each other and ALL of the mesh on both is smashed in. It's a miracle they still run at all.

Your instincts are right: If it's cooling properly, leave it alone. Techs can only make it worse and will likely sabotage it. Don't use filters over MERV 8. Sounds like you have substantial skills. My old systems lasted 47 yrs. and were still running when I replaced them.

My Rheem high efficiency heat pump is 34 years old. I live in C. Florida so from March until October the unit runs daily. From November to February, off and on heat or cool on when needed. I've replaced the fan motor, capacitor and contacts just once each. No leaks. I clean the evaporator and compressor coils occasionally and change the filter about monthly. I got an AC guy who maintains my rentals and gives me great prices. He told me "run it 'til it dies". Amen.

I disagree with the annual PM's. Every time they come out and attach their gauges a small amount of refrigerate is lost which adds up over the years. In addition the A/C companies usually send out their least experienced people to do the PM as a learning experience for them. There is no way to predict when an electrical component is going to fail. Just go outside and listen to your a/c every month and listen for any problems.

    • @wholeNwon

I've been taking care of my own systems for almost 50 yrs. and agree with you. No one ever touches my units. IMHO, the majority of HVAC techs are crooks at best and very often incompetent. The majority of installations aren't done correctly either.
